TRAVEL TIPS

Air Travel

New York is one of the easiest states in America to reach by plane, and international fares to New York City are among the least expensive in the United States (except for Asian and Australian flights, which are cheaper to California). Just about every major international airline with U.S. service flies to New York City, via either JFK or Newark airports. Nearly a dozen other airports in New York State have direct service throughout the United States and Canada on anywhere from 3 to 12 airlines. Some sample flying times to New York City: from Chicago (2½ hours), London (7 hours), Los Angeles (6 hours), Sydney via Los Angeles (21 hours).

Airports and Flights

The major air gateways to New York City are LaGuardia Airport and JFK International Airport in Queens, and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. Regional airports with direct service on several commercial carriers to many cities are Albany International Airport, Buffalo Niagara International Airport, Greater Binghamton Airport, Greater Rochester International Airport, Long Island Islip Macarthur, Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, Syracuse Hancock International Airport, and Westchester County Airport in White Plains. Although flights in and out of the main New York City airports are generally cheaper than those for smaller airports statewide, there are exceptions. Macarthur on Long Island and Buffalo are served by Southwest; Buffalo also has jetBlue service, via JFK. Discount carriers also serve Rochester (jetBlue), Stewart (Southeast Airlines and TransMeridian Airlines), and Syracuse (jetBlue and TransMeridian Airlines). If you're not spending time in New York City, avoid its busy facilities, where car-rental rates also tend to be astronomically high. If you're headed to the Adirondacks, consider flying into Montréal (Aéroports de Montréal), which is about a two-hour drive from Lake Placid. Except for some rural areas upstate, nearly every major region in New York is within a 90-minute drive of two or more airports.
